Why are some books titles underlined instead of italicized?

If you ever come on the title of a book or journal that is underlined instead of italicized, that is an unedited sentence from the pre-online edition of the Guide.   I change them over when I see them, but I never went looking.   I used underlining exclusively in the mid-1990s because my word processing program didn’t have italics.
