Not your typical Oregon legal research resources
I added a section called “Other Useful Information” to the Oregon entry. The section covers the non-legal information I am most often asked to find for other states — Business Registrations, News, UCC Filings and Vital Records.

Expanded explanation of verifying active military duty
I am regularly asked to verify whether a defendant is currently serving in the military. The best way to do this is to search the Official Department of Defense Servicemembers Civil Relief Act website. This is slightly trickier than it … Continue reading

New section on finding police reports
I just wrote up a section on finding Police Reports in the Criminal Law entry. There are actually several ways to get police reports, depending on state laws, local laws, and the relevant police department’s policies. Vehicle accident reports are often … Continue reading

Busy morning for the tax-exempt entity entries
This morning I spruced up the Hospitals, Tax-Exempt Organizations, Campaign Contributions and Foundations entries. In addition to the edits, I added in links to the Active Organizations search posted by the National Center For Charitable Statistics and the IRS’s Political Organization … Continue reading
List of National Archives researchers

Some additions: A “Campaign Contributions” section for the Background Checks entry; A “Dockets/Case Information” section for the Massachusetts entry; A “Land Records” section for the Washington State entry; The specialty public records platform Archives for the “Marriage and Divorce Records” section … Continue reading
New entry: Background Checks
I finished the first draft of the Background Checks entry and posted it live. I wrote it as a checklist to help people remember all the places to look for useful information. I’m sure I left out some good ones, … Continue reading

New Jersey Superior Court case information system
I added the New Jersey Courts Public Access system to the “Docket Sheets” section of the New Jersey entry. The system provides case information for civil cases heard in the New Jersey Superior Courts.
Was your doctor paid to promote that drug?
I added ProPublica’s Dollars for Docs database of payments made by pharmaceutical companies to physicians to the resources you might want to check when doing background research on Doctors. Especially relevant for background checks on medical researchers and expert witnesses.
